Luxurious spiral-shaped horns, a lush suspension of wool on the neck-all this significantly distinguishes screw-horned goats from other wild goats.

Social behavior

Horned goats are kept mainly by groups consisting of 10-20 animals (rutting season – autumn-winter). In spring and summer, adult males often stay alone, and females form their own groups consisting of 2-3 adult animals, toddlers and yearlings.

Reproduction

As a result of pregnancy, which lasts 5 months, one or two baby goats are born. At the age of one week, babies begin to follow their mother and try new leaves and blades of grass.

Species and people

Since ancient times, the screw-horned goat has been a desirable prey for hunters. Goats were killed for meat and luxurious horns. At the same time, the largest healthy males – owners of the largest horns – and the best producers are knocked out of the population. The population size is also affected by the development of sheep breeding, as wild goats are displaced from the best pastures.

Interesting Facts

In the screw-horned goat, the horns are twisted in opposite directions, the number of turns is 2-3, rarely 4 turns.

The record holder for life expectancy is a screw-horned goat, who lived in one of the zoos in the United States for 19 years and 1 month.
