The striped raccoon is a small stocky animal with excellent night vision and keen sense of smell and hearing.

Social behavior

Males live alone, young raccoons stay with their mother during the first year of life on her site. Growing up, the juveniles settle, and males leave the maternal site for much greater distances than females, who usually stay nearby.

Reproduction

Pregnancy lasts 9-10 weeks. As a result, up to 7 toothless, blind cubs are born, which are covered with light brown fur and weigh about 60-75 grams. Black and white stripes on the head and tail begin to appear only after 10 days of life.

Species and people

Raccoons have long been caught for fur. However, active hunting for raccoons did not lead to a serious decrease in the number of these animals. The species is widespread in nature, and has recently been actively exploring suburban areas and city parks in all major US cities.

Interesting Facts

The raccoon's movable feet can turn almost 180 °, which is useful when descending from a tree to the ground.

The common raccoon is the only member of the raccoon family that, with the onset of winter, falls asleep for about 4 months.
